Bhutan Telecom’s 4G (LTE) service was launched on the 24th of October, 2013. 4G (LTE) has been launched with two main objectives; firstly, to stay abreast of technology trends with 4G being the next stage in the mobile broadband access and secondly, to serve growing demand for high speed data and mobility as 4G is much faster than 3G or home broadband. Further it would help in offloading 3G data traffic which will enhance customer experience in download speeds.
LTE was launched in Thimphu, Thimphu being the nation’s one of the most valuable data markets and Thimphu-ites can use the service at places such as Norzin Lam, Chubachu, Offices near dzong, Kawajangsa, Changangkha, Ministers’ Enclave and other places around Motithang High School. However, the service will be launched in other places around the country in the coming years, after having considered market viability and other factors.
To use this service, 4G SIM cards are available at NU 500/- with NU 500 worth data for free for 7 days. 4G customers will be charged NU .001 per KB at pay-per-use scheme.
Thimphu’s 4G service operates in 1800 MHz (band 3) with Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) technology. This band was chosen since it is widely adopted by most Southeast Asian Countries which means that dongles and other devices like phones could be easily available in the market. But customers are advised to check with their vendors if their gadgets support this frequency band before availing 4G service. Some examples of gadgets that can support this service are Sony Z, HTC one, Nokia Lumia-920 and iPad mini among others.
LTE is purely for high speed mobile broadband access and therefore, will not support voice and text currently. However if customer’s devices support 1800MHz band LTE, 850/2100 MHz band 3G and GSM 900/1800 MHz band (2G), it will have the option of falling back on 3G/2G network wherever there is no 4G network coverage. This fallback can be automatic and customers can avail normal services at existing tariff rates. But to switch back to 4G network, customers will have to manually select the LTE service. Therefore customers are requested to note the following information while making purchases of dongles, smart devices, smart-phones etc. The devices should support
a) LTE FDD 1800 MHz band
b) UMTS/3G -850/2100 MHz band
c) GSM 900/1800 MHz band
With LTE, users can continuously watch latest videos, TV series, play online games, upload videos and more. For more information/enquiry, please call us at the toll free number 1600.
